Function and technical context

The timing belt is a critical element of the engine's timing system, responsible for transmitting motion from the crankshaft to the camshaft to coordinate the opening and closing of the intake and exhaust valves. On Yamaha F15C and F20B outboard motors, this belt works under constant tension in a marine environment subject to vibrations, salinity and temperature variations. Its deterioration or rupture causes misalignment of valve timing, resulting in serious loss of power, poor compression and, in extreme cases, irreversible damage to pistons and valves.

When to replace this part?

Timing belts show signs of wear such as superficial cracks, fraying of the edges, loss of elasticity or squeaking during starting. Although there is no universal fixed interval, it is recommended to check the condition at each seasonal maintenance and replace it preventively every 5-7 years or according to the manufacturer's recommendations for outboard motors, regardless of the number of hours of operation. A preventive replacement avoids sudden breakdown in navigation and costly repairs of internal engine components.
