Description

Function and technical context

The sacrificial anode is the component responsible for protecting the submerged metal parts of the boat and the outboard or inboard motor against galvanic corrosion. It acts as the preferred electrode in the galvanic pair: being a more electrochemically active metal, it corrodes itself before the noble parts of the engine do so, such as propellers, axles, aluminum casings or heat exchangers. This VM anode with reference TEN02060T works directly in the cathodic protection system of the powertrain or submerged propulsion unit, being a passive but critical element for the structural integrity of the equipment. Its deterioration or absence causes accelerated corrosion on high-cost components, which can irreparably affect the integrity of the block, the tail shaft or the lower engine casing.

When to replace this part?

Sacrificial anodes should be inspected at the beginning of each boating season and replaced when they have lost approximately 50% of their mass, have a very irregular surface, or show signs of advanced erosion. In boats that remain in the water continuously or in areas with high electrical conductivity of the water (ports with eddy currents or very concentrated salt water), wear can occur in a few weeks, so monthly inspection is recommended. Replacing the anode preventively before it is completely depleted is the most economical measure to avoid serious galvanic damage to aluminum or stainless steel components that can cost several thousand euros in repairs.
