Description

Function and technical context

The Arneson surface zinc anode acts as sacrificial cathodic protection in surface propulsion systems, preventing galvanic corrosion from attacking the noble metal components of the drive, such as the shaft, propeller and casing. It works within the antifouling and anticorrosion system of the propulsion line, deliberately exposing itself to the electrochemical environment of salt or brackish water to be consumed instead of the structural parts of the propellant. If this anode is completely depleted without being replaced in time, the galvanic attack begins to degrade the aluminum or bronze parts of the Arneson Drive, which can lead to pitting, material loss and high-cost structural failures. Its correct installation and periodic replacement is, therefore, one of the most cost-effective maintenance measures on vessels equipped with Arneson-type surface propulsion.

When to replace this part?

Zinc anodes should be inspected at least once a season and replaced when they have lost approximately 50% of their mass, since below that threshold the cathodic protection becomes insufficient. Symptoms of a depleted anode in an Arneson Drive include pitting or surface erosion in the aluminum of the propeller, discoloration of submerged metal parts, and, in advanced cases, looseness or irregularities in the drive shaft due to progressive corrosion. The professional recommendation is to replace this anode preventively at the beginning of each nautical season or after each prolonged stranding, given that the cost of the anode is minimal compared to that of repairing a shaft or drive damaged by galvanic corrosion.
