Description

Function and technical context

Propeller sacrificial anodes act as an electrochemical shield, attracting galvanic corrosion to themselves and protecting the noble metal surfaces of the propeller and tail shaft from the accelerated wear caused by prolonged immersion in salt or brackish water. This Ø53 mm zinc anode is designed specifically for Vetus propellers, fitting precisely over the hub to ensure effective protection without interfering with the hydrodynamic performance of the propulsion. Zinc is the material of choice for boats that navigate in marine waters or estuaries, since its electrochemical potential makes it the ideal sacrifice compared to bronzes, stainless steels and aluminum alloys. If the anode is completely consumed without being replaced, corrosion directly attacks the propeller and shaft, potentially rendering them useless and generating very high-cost repairs.

When to replace this part?

The clearest symptom that the propeller anode needs replacement is the visible loss of mass: when the anode has consumed between 50% and 60% of its volume, it must be replaced immediately, since its protective capacity is compromised. Preventive inspection and replacement is recommended at least once a season, coinciding with the annual beaching or bottom maintenance; In areas with high water conductivity or with intense galvanic currents (marinas with many boats), it is advisable to check its condition every six months. Changing the anode before it is completely used up is the most economical maintenance measure to avoid replacing the propeller or shaft, components whose cost far exceeds that of any anode.
