ANODO HELICE MAX-POWER Ø32 (ZN)
Description
Function and technical context
This zinc anode for a 32 mm diameter Max-Power propeller acts as a sacrificial galvanic protector, absorbing electrolytic corrosion that would otherwise destroy the metal of the propeller and propulsion shaft. It works within the vessel's cathodic protection system, creating an electrical potential difference that diverts the galvanic attack toward the anode, preserving the structural metal components of the propellant. Zinc is the ideal material for boats that navigate in salt water or brackish water, where electrolytic conductivity is high and galvanic corrosion can progress rapidly. Without this properly sized and maintained sacrificial element, the bronze or stainless steel propeller, shaft, and fittings are exposed to severe degradation that compromises both propulsion performance and the structural integrity of the system.
When to replace this part?
The clearest sign that the zinc anode needs to be replaced is when it has lost more than 50% of its mass: at that point it no longer offers effective cathodic protection and the propeller components begin to suffer active corrosion, which manifests itself visually as pitting, pitting or loss of material on the propeller or shaft. For boats in regular use in salt water, it is recommended to inspect the anode at least once a season—normally during the winter shutdown or at each beaching—and replace it if it shows wear greater than mentioned, regardless of the time elapsed. Replacing the anode preventively at each annual grounding is the most common professional and economically sensible practice: the cost of the anode is minimal compared to repairing or replacing a corroded propeller or shaft.
