Function and technical context

The sacrificial anode for Varifold 3 and 4-blade propellers with a diameter of Ø41 mm acts as cathodic protection of the propulsion assembly against galvanic corrosion caused by continued immersion in salt, brackish or fresh water. Made of aluminum alloy (reference REC9436AL), this component oxidizes in a controlled manner instead of the nobler metallic elements of the propeller and shaft, preserving the structural integrity of the propulsion system. Its correct installation on Varifold type variable pitch propellers is especially critical, since these propellers incorporate internal blade adjustment mechanisms that are particularly sensitive to the effects of electrolytic corrosion. Without effective anodic protection, galvanic attack can compromise the blade pivots, hub and shaft threads, leading to serious mechanical failures and costly replacements of propulsion components.

When to replace this part?

Aluminum anodes should be inspected at least once a season and replaced when they have lost approximately 50% of their mass, have an irregular surface with deep pits, or have been reduced to a residual core with no protective capacity. Unlike zinc anodes, aluminum alloy anodes like this one (REC9436AL) are recommended for both salt and brackish water, so their consumption rate may vary depending on the aggressiveness of the marine environment; In areas of high salinity or with high galvanic currents in the pontoon, it is advisable to check its condition every six months. Replacing the anode preventively at the beginning of each nautical season is the most economical practice to avoid the degradation of a Varifold propeller, whose replacement cost far exceeds that of a simple replacement anode.
