Function and technical context
The J-PROP propeller anode with a diameter of 80 mm in zinc is a cathodic protection element designed specifically for propellers and propulsion shafts on motor boats. It acts as a sacrificial electrode: being a metal with a greater negative electrochemical potential than the stainless steel or bronze of the propeller, it preferentially oxidizes, preserving the integrity of the propulsion assembly. Its installation in the propeller hub guarantees that galvanic corrosion—accelerated in salty and brackish waters—attacks the anode and not the high-cost structural components. Without adequate cathodic protection, the propeller, shaft and mating accessories can suffer severe pitting and material loss that compromises the propulsion efficiency and safety of the vessel.
When to replace this part?
The clearest sign that the propeller anode has reached its useful life is a visible reduction in its mass: when it has lost approximately half of its volume it must be replaced immediately, since its protective capacity is compromised. It is recommended to inspect the anode at each beaching or at least once per nautical season; In areas with especially saline water or with high electrical activity in the port, the review should be semiannual. Replacing the anode preventively at the beginning of each season is the most recommended practice to avoid irreversible damage to the propeller and shaft that can lead to very high-cost repairs out of port.
