Description

Function and technical context

The J-PROP propeller anode with a diameter of 60 mm acts as sacrificial cathodic protection for propeller shafts and thrusters in salt and brackish water nautical installations. Made of zinc (ZN), this anode is consumed in a controlled manner to protect the noble metals—stainless steel, bronze and aluminum—that make up the propulsion assembly against galvanic corrosion, one of the most aggressive deterioration agents in marine environments. Its specific J-PROP design makes it compatible with Ø60 mm axles, guaranteeing a secure fit and continuous electrical contact with the metal to be protected. Without effective cathodic protection, the shaft and metal components of the transmission would suffer accelerated corrosion, which could compromise the structural integrity of the propulsion system and lead to serious breakdowns during navigation.

When to replace this part?

Zinc anodes should be inspected at least once a season and replaced when they have lost around 50% of their mass: at that point they no longer offer sufficient protection and the structural metal is exposed to galvanic corrosion. The symptoms of a depleted anode are visible to the naked eye—very reduced surface area, whitish and rough appearance with obvious loss of volume—and are sometimes detected indirectly by incipient pitting on the propeller shaft or hub. The professional recommendation is to renew the anode at each annual docking of the boat; Replacing it preventively is the most economical solution to repairing or replacing a corroded shaft out of port.
