Description

Function and technical context

This VETUS KW3-V-SET0153 aluminum anode is part of the boat's cathodic protection system, acting as a sacrificial element to preserve submerged metal parts against galvanic corrosion. Being made of aluminum alloy, it is especially suitable for use in salty and brackish waters, where electrochemical processes are more aggressive on metals such as bronze, stainless steel or the propeller alloy. Its correct operation protects critical components of the VETUS shaft, blade or propulsion unit, preventing accelerated degradation of much higher cost parts. Without active cathodic protection in good condition, the metallic elements of the propulsion system are exposed to pitting, material thinning and eventual structural failure.

When to replace this part?

Sacrificial anodes should be inspected at least once a season, ideally at the annual boat docking. The clearest sign that the anode has reached its useful life is the loss of between 50% and 75% of its mass: when it appears severely eroded, irregular or reduced, it should be replaced immediately before throwing away again. If corrosion is observed on adjacent parts of the propulsion system, it is an indication that the anode has been completely consumed or that there is a problem in the onboard electrical circuit. Renewing the anode preventively at each seasonal tune-up is the most economical measure to avoid serious and costly breakdowns in the propulsion components.
