Function and technical context
Aluminum anodes for Side Power side thrusters act as active galvanic protection of the submerged metal components of the auxiliary propulsion system, attracting electrochemical corrosion that would otherwise attack the propeller, nozzle and thruster casing. They work within the boat's cathodic protection system, sacrificing themselves in a controlled manner to preserve the noblest metal alloys of the set. Its correct installation is especially critical in marinas and ports where the galvanic current is high, environments in which corrosion can progress rapidly and invisibly below the waterline. If this anode runs out without being replaced in time, the structural and functional elements of the thruster are exposed to severe corrosion that can render the bow thruster or stern thruster useless and require high-cost shipyard repairs. The aluminum alloy of this anode makes it particularly suitable for salt water and brackish water, offering effective protection in the most demanding boating environments.
When to replace this part?
The clearest symptom that the anode has reached its useful life is the visible reduction in its mass: when it has lost approximately half of its initial volume, it must be replaced immediately, without waiting for the next stranding. The industry standard recommendation for Side Power thruster anodes is to inspect them at least once a season and replace them preventively at each annual beaching, regardless of their apparent condition, since a depleted anode during wintering can leave the assembly unprotected in the first months of navigation. Changing the anode during each seasonal maintenance is the most cost-effective preventive measure to avoid irreparable damage to high-cost components such as the propeller or thruster casing.
