Description

Function and technical context

Zinc anodes are the primary cathodic protection mechanism in outboard motors and boats exposed to salt or brackish water. This sacrificial anode acts as a preferred galvanic element: as it is a more electrochemically active metal than the aluminum or steel of the engine components, it corrodes first, preserving the structural and mechanical parts of the assembly. With a diameter of 37 mm, it is specifically designed for SOLE/2 type mounts, protecting them against galvanic corrosion generated by eddy currents and the interaction between different metals in contact with water. Without adequate cathodic protection, shafts, propellers, casings and drain plugs can suffer severe pitting or even structural destruction within a few sailing seasons.

When to replace this part?

The clearest sign that the anode needs to be replaced is when it has lost approximately 50% of its mass: at that point its protective capacity is compromised and the metal components of the engine are exposed to galvanic corrosion. In saltwater areas or areas with high electrical conductivity, it is recommended to inspect the anodes at the beginning and end of each boating season, and replace them at least once a year or sooner if wear requires it. Replacing the anode preventatively when preparing your boat for the season is the most economical measure to avoid costly repairs to housings, shafts or propellers.
