Description

Function and technical context

The reinforced Ø 125 mm aluminum alloy rudder disc anode is a cathodic protection component specifically designed to be installed on the shaft or disc of the rudder of boats. Its function is to act as a sacrificial metal, oxidizing in a controlled manner to protect the structural metal parts of the rudder—stainless steel, bronze or naval aluminum—against galvanic corrosion caused by the action of salt or brackish water. Being the most electronegative element in the galvanic circuit, the anode consumes itself before corrosion attacks critical parts such as the rudder blade, shaft or steering hardware. The reinforced version guarantees a greater active mass and a longer useful life compared to standard models, which makes it especially recommended for deep-sea navigation or in areas with high salinity and high electrolyte activity.

When to replace this part?

The rudder anodes should be inspected at least once a season, coinciding with the annual beaching or hull maintenance. The unequivocal sign that replacement is necessary is when the anode has lost between 50% and 60% of its volume, has a grainy texture or has partially disintegrated; at that point it has stopped protecting effectively. If pitting, surface erosion, or discoloration is observed on the rudder blade or shaft, the anode is likely depleted or poorly secured. Replacing the anode preventively at each grounding is the most economical practice to avoid structural damage to the rudder that can compromise the controllability of the boat and lead to high-cost repairs.
