Description

Function and technical context

The Ø 50 mm reinforced aluminum alloy rudder disc anode is a cathodic protection element specifically designed to be installed on the rudder shaft or disc of pleasure boats and work boats. Its mission is to sacrifice itself electrochemically to protect the submerged metal parts of the hull, rudder and its fittings against galvanic corrosion, a particularly aggressive phenomenon in salt water and brackish water. The reinforced design of this anode provides greater active mass compared to standard models, which translates into longer-lasting protection and longer replacement intervals. The aluminum alloy makes it ideal for salt and ocean waters, where zinc anodes offer inferior performance and magnesium anodes would be excessively reactive.

When to replace this part?

Rudder disc anodes should be inspected at least at the beginning and end of each nautical season; The general technical rule establishes that they must be replaced when they have lost approximately 50% of their mass, since below that volume the cathodic protection is insufficient and the noble metals of the rudder are exposed to corrosion. Symptoms of a depleted or missing anode appear as pitting, surface erosion, or loss of material on the rudder itself, bushings, or adjacent bronze and stainless steel hardware. As a professional preventive measure, it is recommended to replace all the boat's anodes simultaneously during the annual beaching, thus avoiding structural damage to the rudder that can lead to high-cost repairs or steering failures during navigation.
