Description

Function and technical context

The sacrificial ingot anodes with a zinc insert are part of the vessel's cathodic protection system, acting as an electrochemical shield against galvanic corrosion that affects submerged iron, stainless steel and aluminum bodies. As zinc is a more electronegative metal than the materials it protects, it preferentially oxidizes, preserving the hull, propeller, drive shafts, anodes of the outboard motor or the tail end intact. The integrated metal insert guarantees firm fixation and continuous electrical contact with the structure it protects, a critical aspect for effective cathodic protection. Without proper anodic protection, galvanic corrosion can compromise the structural integrity of high-cost components in very few sailing seasons, especially in salt or brackish waters.

When to replace this part?

A zinc anode must be replaced when it has lost approximately 50% of its mass or presents a completely blackened and rough surface, clear symptoms that the material has been consumed and no longer offers sufficient protection. Preventive inspection and replacement is recommended at the beginning of each nautical season or, at least, once a year if the boat remains in the water continuously, since in waters with high conductivity consumption can accelerate significantly. Replacing the anode before it is completely depleted avoids leaving submerged metal components unprotected, which could lead to much higher-cost hull or transmission repairs. Reference: REC8424.
