Function and technical context

Sacrificial anodes are the central element of the cathodic protection of any vessel: their mission is to oxidize in a controlled manner instead of the structural metals of the hull, propeller, shafts or engine tail. This oval zinc anode is specifically designed to be welded directly on the hull or on submerged metal structures, offering permanent fixation and an optimal electrical contact surface. Zinc is the reference material for boats that sail in salt water, since its electrochemical potential makes it the most electropositive metal of the set, attracting all galvanic corrosion to it and thus preserving the aluminum, steel and bronze of the vital elements of the boat. Without effective cathodic protection, corrosion can compromise the structural integrity of the hull, aft fittings and propulsion systems within a few seasons.

When to replace this part?

The clearest sign that a zinc anode needs to be replaced is the loss of more than 50% of its mass: at that point it no longer has enough capacity to protect the rest of the submerged metals and corrosion begins to attack the structural components. It is also common to find anodes that have come off due to poor previous welding, which leaves the hull completely unprotected without the owner noticing until the next beaching. Inspection and replacement is recommended at least once a season, coinciding with the beaching to clean and paint the hull; In areas with high salinity or stray electrical currents in the port, it may be necessary to inspect them every six months. Replacing anodes preventively is the most economical maintenance intervention possible compared to the cost of repairing a corroded hull or replacing a damaged tailshaft.
