Description

Function and technical context

This oval aluminum anode for welding acts as cathodic protection of the submerged metal elements of the hull and the body of the boat. It works within the galvanic protection system, sacrificing itself electrochemically to prevent corrosion in steel structures, naval aluminum or bronze alloys exposed to salt or brackish water. Its oval shape facilitates uniform distribution of the protective field on flat or curved surfaces of the hull, keels, rudders and steering appendages. The aluminum alloy composition makes it especially suitable for navigation in salty and brackish waters, where it offers greater electrochemical efficiency than zinc under certain conditions. Without proper anodic protection, galvanic corrosion can silently destroy critical structural components, leading to costly shipyard repairs.

When to replace this part?

The anodes must be visually inspected at each beaching or at least once a season: when the anode has lost approximately 50% of its mass due to wear, it is essential to replace it before it is completely consumed and leaves the hull metals unprotected. Warning signs include reddish or whitish pitting or corrosion on propellers, shafts, or adjacent hull areas, indicating that cathodic protection has failed. The professional recommendation is to renew the anodes preventively at the beginning of each sailing season or after 12 months in the water; Acting before total consumption avoids costly structural damage that is not always visible until a complete dock.
