ANODO OVAL SOLDAR 250X90MX35M (ZN)
Description
Function and technical context
This oval-shaped sacrificial anode, made of zinc (Zn), is specifically designed to be welded directly onto the vessel's hull, providing active cathodic protection against galvanic corrosion in saltwater and brackish marine environments. Its function is to act as a sacrificial electrode: being a more electronegative metal than the steel, aluminum or bronze of the structural elements of the hull, the anode preferentially corrodes, preserving the integrity of the submerged metal surfaces. The dimensions 250×90×35 mm allow for a large electrochemical contact surface, suitable for protecting hull areas of medium-sized vessels where welding guarantees permanent fixation and optimal electrical contact without intermediate resistance. Without correct cathodic protection, the hull and metal appendages are exposed to electrolysis and accelerated corrosion, which can seriously compromise the watertightness and useful life of the boat.
When to replace this part?
Zinc anodes should be visually inspected at least at the beginning and end of each nautical season: when the anode has lost approximately 50% of its volume or has a very irregular and friable surface, it should be replaced without delay. If the anode is seen to be virtually intact after a full season, it may indicate a problem of poor electrical contact or the presence of paint on its surface, which nullifies its protective function. As a professional rule, it is recommended to renew the anodes welded to the hull every season as a preventive measure, especially in ports with high electrical activity or in anchorage areas with high salinity, thus avoiding structural damage to the hull, the repair of which would be significantly more expensive.
