Description

Function and technical context

The oval zinc anode for welding acts as passive cathodic protection in hulls, rudders, flying buttresses and submerged metal structures of boats, sacrificing itself electrochemically to preserve the noble metals of the assembly - steel, aluminum or bronze - against galvanic corrosion produced by the action of salt or brackish water. Its 120x40mm oval geometry is designed to provide an efficient reaction surface in areas of moderate water flow, making it especially suitable for welded installation on keels, rudders and structural hull parts. If this anode is depleted without being replaced in time, the metals with the highest cathodic value in the hull are exposed to an accelerated oxidation process that can compromise the structural integrity of the vessel and result in high-cost shipyard repairs. The reference REC8405 corresponds to a high-purity zinc composition, ideal for applications in seawater where zinc is more effective than aluminum or magnesium anodes.

When to replace this part?

A zinc anode should be replaced when it has lost approximately 50% of its mass; Waiting for complete wear leaves the base metal unprotected for weeks or months before the next inspection. The standard maintenance guideline in recreational boating establishes the inspection and replacement of the anodes at least once a season, coinciding with the annual beaching, although in areas with high electrolyte aggressiveness or boats that remain in the water for a long time, a semiannual inspection may be required. Replacing the oval anode preventively at each grounding is the most economical and effective measure to avoid pitting in the hull, erosion of shafts and deterioration of propellers that involve much more expensive interventions.
