Description

Function and technical context

This oval zinc welding anode acts as passive cathodic protection on hulls, keels, rudders and submerged metal structures of boats. Working within the galvanic protection system, its mission is to electrochemically sacrifice itself rather than the structural metal of the hull or drive components, preventing electrolytic corrosion from deteriorating the steel, aluminum or casting of the vessel. With dimensions of 210 mm in length and 70 mm in diameter, its oval geometry makes it especially suitable for installation in areas with limited space where an effective sacrificial surface is required. Fixation by welding guarantees permanent and continuous electrical contact, eliminating the losses of conductivity that can occur with bolted systems when corrosion appears at the joining point, making it the preferred solution in professional installations and work boats.

When to replace this part?

The main symptom that an anode has exhausted its useful life is the visible reduction in its mass: when the anode has lost approximately 50% of its volume, it has reached the limit of its protective capacity and must be replaced immediately. Zinc anodes are compulsorily checked at each annual or seasonal docking, since their consumption rate depends on the marine environment, the density of galvanic currents in the port and the navigation time. Postponing the replacement of an exhausted anode can lead to severe hull corrosion, pitting in propellers, pitting in shafts or deterioration of the rudder blade, repairs that more than multiply the cost of a simple replacement anode.
