Description

Function and technical context

The smooth zinc bars with a diameter of 30 mm and a length of 400 mm are cathodic protection elements designed to be installed in metal hulls, steel or aluminum structures and submerged elements of vessels exposed to the marine environment. Their main function is to act as sacrificial anodes: having a more negative electrochemical potential than the metals they protect, they preferentially corrode, preserving propellers, shafts, rudders and any valuable metal element of the hull against galvanic corrosion. This type of anode in smooth bar format is especially suitable for custom assemblies, installations on keels, stringers and naval structures where a rectilinear and continuous geometry is required. Without effective cathodic protection, electrolytic degradation can proceed silently and compromise the structural integrity of the hull or steering and propulsion appendages.

When to replace this part?

Zinc anodes should be inspected at least once a season and replaced when they have lost approximately 50% of their mass or have an irregular surface with deep pits, indicating that the zinc has been consumed and no longer protects effectively. On vessels that navigate in waters with high conductivity or in port areas with high galvanic currents, wear can be noticeably faster and require intermediate revisions. Replacing the anodes preventively at the beginning of each season is the practice recommended by professionals in the sector: the cost of a zinc bar is minimal compared to repairing a shaft, propeller or hull damaged by electrolytic corrosion.
