BARRAS LISAS Ø 25 L. 400 (ZN)
Description
Function and technical context
The smooth zinc bars with a diameter of 25 mm and a length of 400 mm are cathodic protection elements designed to safeguard the submerged metal components of the boat against galvanic corrosion. They act as sacrificial anodes in an elongated cylindrical format, integrating into hull protection systems, tail shafts, flying buttresses or metal structures in permanent contact with seawater. Since zinc is a metal with a greater electronegative potential than steel, aluminum or bronze, it preferably oxidizes, protecting them from electrochemical degradation. Its smooth bar geometry facilitates installation on supports or clamps in difficult-to-access positions, being a versatile solution for the protection of multiple vulnerable points of the propulsion assembly and the hull.
When to replace this part?
A zinc rod anode must be replaced when it has lost approximately 50% of its mass, since below that threshold its protective capacity drops drastically and noble metals are exposed to electrolytic corrosion. The inspection should be carried out at least once a season, or more frequently in areas of salt water with high conductivity or on boats with complex electrical installations that can generate parasitic currents. Replacing the anode preventively at the beginning of each boating season is the recommended practice to avoid severe damage to shafts, propellers or aluminum hulls that are extremely expensive to repair.
