Function and technical context

The smooth zinc bars with a diameter of 12 mm and a length of 400 mm are passive cathodic protection elements used in boats and metallic nautical structures exposed to seawater. They function as sacrificial anodes in bar format, offering a zinc surface that preferentially oxidizes over the noble metals of the hull, propellers, shafts and other submerged components, transferring electrons and stopping the galvanic corrosion process. Its smooth cylindrical geometry facilitates installation on tubular supports, collars or round profile structures, being especially common on keels, rudders, stern tubes and propulsion systems made of steel or aluminum alloys. Insufficient cathodic protection or the depletion of these anodes directly exposes the structural metals to marine electrolysis, with serious consequences such as pitting, loss of metallic thickness and structural failures in critical areas of the vessel.

When to replace this part?

Zinc bar anodes should be inspected at least at the beginning and end of each boating season, and replaced when they have lost approximately 50% of their mass, have a cracked zinc surface, or have worn unevenly, indicating a possible insulation or stray current problem in the installation. In environments with high galvanic activity - ports with many boats connected to electrical ground or very saline waters - wear can be significantly faster, so it is advisable to also check them mid-season. Preventatively replacing anodes before they are completely depleted is the most economical maintenance measure to avoid costly repairs to the boat's hull, shaft or propeller.
