Description

Function and technical context

The 25 mm diameter anode plug (reference 00716) is a galvanic protection element designed to be installed in holes or ducts in the hull, engine or transmission of boats. Its main function is to act as a sacrificial anode in screw cap format, protecting surrounding metal structures against electrolytic corrosion caused by galvanic currents in salt or brackish water. As it is a more electronegative metal than steel or aluminum, the anode plug preferentially corrodes, preserving the parts of greatest structural value such as engine blocks, axles, propellers or transmission casings. Its diameter of 25 mm makes it suitable for specific housings where punctual cathodic protection is essential to guarantee the integrity of the assembly.

When to replace this part?

Anode plugs should be inspected at least once a season and replaced when they have lost between 30% and 50% of their mass due to corrosion, since below that threshold they no longer offer effective protection. The symptoms of an exhausted anode are visible: very reduced surface area, porous or disintegrated appearance and, in advanced cases, the appearance of corrosion on the adjacent metal parts that the anode was supposed to protect. The professional recommendation is to change all sacrificial anodes at the beginning of each nautical season or after a prolonged period of mooring, without waiting for complete wear, since the cost of an anode plug is minimal compared to repairing a corroded block or transmission.
