ANODO COLGAR 225GR (AL)
Description
Function and technical context
Hanging aluminum anodes act as active galvanic protection on boats, sacrificing themselves electrochemically to preserve the submerged metal surfaces of the hull, engine legs and propellers against galvanic corrosion. This type of anode is designed to be installed directly on the hull or stern of the boat by direct fixation, offering protection in areas exposed to permanent contact with water. Aluminum as an anode material is especially suitable for use in salty and brackish waters, where its electrochemical behavior surpasses that of zinc in terms of performance and protective efficiency. Without correct cathodic protection, the noble metals of the boat – propellers, shafts, bronze or stainless steel closures – suffer accelerated degradation that can compromise the structural integrity and operation of the propulsion system.
When to replace this part?
The clearest sign that a hanging anode needs to be replaced is when it has lost more than 50% of its mass through galvanic erosion, showing an irregular, porous surface or visible loss of material. It is recommended to inspect the aluminum anodes at least once a season - ideally at each stranding - and replace them preventively before they are completely used up, since a consumed anode leaves the most valuable metal parts unprotected. Changing the anode systematically at the beginning of each boating season is the most effective professional practice to avoid costly damage to propellers, shafts and other submerged metal surfaces.
