Function and technical context
The zinc sacrificial anodes in plate format act as cathodic protection of the hull and the submerged metallic elements of the vessel, attracting electrolytic corrosion before it affects structures, propellers, shafts or accessories of greater value. This plate anode is fixed directly on flat surfaces of the hull or structural elements, creating an effective galvanic barrier against marine corrosion in salt or mixed waters. Without adequate cathodic protection, the noble metals of the underwater assembly – bronzes, stainless steels, aluminum – are progressively and irreversibly attacked, compromising the structural integrity of the vessel and generating costly breakdowns that are difficult to detect in their initial phases. The zinc used in this anode guarantees optimal electrochemical potential for salt and brackish water environments, being the reference alloy in hull protection in the professional nautical and sports field.
When to replace this part?
The clearest sign that a sacrificial anode needs to be replaced is the loss of 50% to 60% of its mass: when the zinc material has been consumed to that point, its cathodic protection capacity is drastically reduced and the metal elements of the hull are exposed to galvanic corrosion. It is recommended to inspect and replace the plate anodes at least once per nautical season, coinciding with the annual tune-up or each stranding, since the rate of consumption depends on the salinity of the water, the time spent at sea and the presence of parasitic electrical currents in the mooring. Replacing the anode preventively, before it is completely exhausted, is the most economical measure to avoid pitting in the hull, deterioration of the shaft and propeller, and high-cost repairs in the shipyard.
