Description

Function and technical context

The Hydromarine 115x65 zinc anode acts as a sacrificial galvanic protector, absorbing electrolytic corrosion that is generated when different metals on the boat come into contact with salt or brackish water. It works within the cathodic protection system of the hull or stern, protecting propellers, shafts, eyebolts, keels and any submerged metal element. Made of high purity zinc, this type of anode is especially indicated for use in seawater and brackish water, where the electrochemical potential of zinc makes it the reference material. If the anode is completely consumed without being replaced, galvanic corrosion directly attacks the structural and propulsion metal components of the boat, which can lead to serious and costly breakdowns.

When to replace this part?

Zinc anodes should be inspected at least once a season and replaced when they have lost approximately 50% of their mass, since below that threshold they lose protective effectiveness significantly. Symptoms of a depleted or missing anode are manifested by the appearance of pitting, porosity or visible corrosion on propellers, shafts and other submerged metal surfaces. Preventive replacement at the beginning of each nautical season, or after long stays in port, guarantees the integrity of the metal elements and avoids high-cost repairs in the dock.
