Function and technical context

The sacrificial anode is an essential component in the cathodic protection system of Yamaha and Mariner marine engines. Made of aluminum, it acts as a defensive barrier against galvanic corrosion generated by continuous contact between the metals of the engine and salt or brackish water. This electrochemical process progressively degrades the internal components of the engine—engine block, crankcase, and other critical parts—if not properly controlled. The anode dissolves in a controlled manner in place of these vital parts, significantly extending the life of the propulsion equipment and preventing punctures, coolant leaks and structural damage to the casing.

When to replace this part?

The anode requires visual inspection before each navigation season and must be replaced when it shows a loss of material greater than 50% of its volume or when it shows cracks and detachments. In salt water or ports with high salinity, replacement is recommended annually or every 100-150 hours of operation, while in fresh water the interval can be considerably extended. Preventive replacement prevents surprises at sea and ensures continuous engine protection against marine corrosion.
