Function and technical context

The sacrificial anode is an essential component in the cathodic protection of Yamaha outboard motors from 6 to 8 hp. It is installed in the seawater cooling circuit, where it corrodes in a controlled manner to protect the metal parts of the engine block, cylinder and aluminum components against galvanic oxidation caused by salt or brackish water. By preferentially degrading, it prevents corrosion from attacking critical engine structures, preventing deep pitting, metal loss and compromises in the propeller's tightness. Its operation is essential to maintain mechanical integrity and performance in long-term marine navigation.

When to replace this part?

The anode must be inspected at the beginning and end of each navigation season, and replaced when it shows erosion of more than 50% of its volume or shows signs of advanced corrosion. Preventive replacement at the beginning of the season is especially recommended in coastal navigation or waters with high salinity, guaranteeing that the engine maintains its cathodic protection during months of intensive use. Changing the anode preventively is a minimal investment that avoids costly repairs due to engine corrosion at sea or prolonged breakdown downtime.
