Description
Function and technical context
The sacrificial anode is an essential component in the cathodic protection system of Yamaha outboard motors. Made of zinc, it corrodes in a controlled manner in place of the critical metal parts of the engine, preventing electrochemical oxidation in the fresh and salt water circuit. This process protects the engine block, cylinder head, cooling ducts and other areas exposed to galvanic corrosion. Its function is especially critical on vessels that navigate in salt water or remain at anchor for long periods, where electrochemical activity accelerates deterioration without this active protection.
When to replace this part?
The anode requires visual inspection at least once per boating season, especially if the engine operates in salt water. Advanced corrosion, visible erosion, or significant thickness loss indicate that it should be replaced before it loses its protective ability. Preventive change is recommended annually or every 100-150 hours of operation in intensive use in salt water, and every 200-300 hours in fresh water. Replacing the anode preventively avoids costly repairs to the engine block and extensions of the crankshaft resulting from deep corrosion that could render the engine unusable in navigation.
