Function and technical context

The sacrificial anode is an essential component in the cathodic protection of Yamaha outboard motors installed on boats. Made of zinc, it acts as a protective barrier against galvanic corrosion that occurs naturally when the metal of the engine comes into contact with salt or brackish water. Its function is to oxidize preferably before the critical metal parts of the engine, thus avoiding the deterioration of cylinders, cylinder heads and internal components. Without this protection, the salinity of the water would accelerate the corrosive process, compromising the structural integrity of the engine and significantly reducing its operational life.

When to replace this part?

The anode should be visually inspected at the end of each boating season and replaced when it has lost approximately 50% of its mass or when it exhibits accelerated erosion. In waters with high mineral content or extreme salinity, wear can be faster, making it advisable to check the condition before each important outing. Replacing it preventively at the beginning of the season avoids surprises on the high seas and guarantees that the engine maintains all its cathodic protection during the months of intensive navigation.
