Function and technical context

Zinc anodes are part of the cathodic protection system of outboard motors, acting as an electrochemical sacrifice to preserve the structural metal parts of the engine against galvanic corrosion. In Suzuki engines of the medium and high power series, these elements protect critical components such as the trim, propeller, shaft and engine foot casing, which are in permanent contact with salt or brackish water. Without adequate anodic protection, corrosion silently advances on aluminum and stainless steel alloys, compromising the structural integrity of the engine and generating costly and difficult-to-repair breakdowns.

When to replace this part?

The clearest symptom that the anodes have completed their cycle is the loss of more than 50% of their mass: when they are excessively worn or have a whitish and friable texture, they have stopped protecting effectively. It is recommended to inspect the anodes at least once a season and replace them when their wear exceeds half, without waiting for them to disappear completely. Replacing the entire kit preventively at the beginning of each nautical season is common practice among professionals: the cost of the kit is minimal compared to repairing a corroded casing or shaft.
