Function and technical context

This zinc anode acts as a sacrificial electrode in the outboard motor's cathodic protection system, absorbing galvanic corrosion that would otherwise attack the structural metal parts of the block and housing. Installed in areas exposed to salt, brackish or river water, zinc preferentially oxidizes over the engine's base metals, preserving the integrity of critical components such as the support, lower casing and transmission elements. Its progressive and controlled deterioration is precisely its working mechanism: when the anode disappears, the motor is left unprotected and corrosion advances on much higher cost parts. Reference 55320-98600 is made of high purity zinc to guarantee maximum electrochemical efficiency in small displacement Suzuki engines of the DT series.

When to replace this part?

The clearest sign that the anode needs to be replaced is when it has lost between 50 and 70% of its mass: if it appears reduced, fragmented or completely consumed, the motor is already exposed to galvanic corrosion. It is recommended to inspect it at the beginning and end of each navigation season, and replace it at least once a year in salt water or water with high conductivity. Changing the anode preventively at each annual service is the most economical measure to avoid serious damage to the casing and submerged metal components of the Suzuki DT4 and DT5.
