Function and technical context

This zinc anode acts as a sacrificial electrode in the outboard motor's cathodic protection system, attracting galvanic corrosion to itself to preserve the structural metal parts of the propeller. It works in the underwater area of ​​the engine, where continued exposure to salt or brackish water generates electrochemical potential differences that rapidly degrade aluminum and steel. Without a healthy anode, components such as the transmission housing, propeller shaft, and water pump are exposed to accelerated corrosion that can render them unusable. When to replace this part?

The clearest symptom that the anode has exhausted its useful life is the visible reduction in its mass: when it has lost approximately half of its volume, it must be replaced before it stops protecting the engine. In saltwater installations, it is recommended to inspect the anode at least at the beginning and end of each nautical season, and replace it whenever it shows wear greater than 50%, regardless of the hours of navigation. Changing the anode preventively at the beginning of the season is the most economical measure to avoid serious repairs due to corrosion in the transmission or lower engine block.
