Function and technical context

This aluminum anode is part of the cathodic protection system of Yanmar SEALDRIVE engines, acting as a sacrificial element to protect the metal parts of the engine against galvanic corrosion produced by contact with sea or brackish water. Being the least noble metal of the set, the anode corrodes in a controlled manner instead of the structural components of the engine, such as the casing, shaft or transmission elements. Without adequate cathodic protection, corrosion can attack critical parts of the propellant, compromising the mechanical integrity of the system and causing serious and costly breakdowns.

When to replace this part?

The anode should be inspected at least once a season and replaced when it has lost approximately half of its mass, since below that level it does not offer sufficient cathodic protection. A completely consumed or missing anode results in visible corrosion on metal parts of the engine, pitting on the casing or accelerated deterioration of the propeller shaft. Replacing it preventively at each annual grounding is the recommended practice to ensure the longevity of the SEALDRIVE motor and avoid high-cost repairs in the middle of the boating season.
