Function and technical context

The trim piston is the hydraulic element that acts inside the inclination cylinder of the trim and tilt system in outboard motors, transforming the pressure generated by the hydraulic pump into controlled linear movement. This movement regulates the angle of attack of the propeller with respect to the transom and the depth of immersion of the propeller, allowing the skipper to optimize propulsive efficiency depending on the load, sea state and navigation speed. A piston in good condition guarantees the precise and sustained response of the system to each operation, while its deterioration can cause erratic movements to complete immobilization of the tilt assembly, leaving the engine fixed in a position that compromises the maneuverability and performance of the boat.

When to replace this part?

The most common signs that the trim piston has reached the limit of its useful life are the loss of position of the engine - which descends on its own under load -, slow or irregular movements during the operation of the trim, and the presence of hydraulic oil oozing from the base of the cylinder, an unequivocal sign that the internal sealing rings have lost their tightness. It is recommended to inspect the hydraulic assembly during each seasonal maintenance, paying special attention to engines that operate in salt water, where accelerated corrosion of the cylinder deteriorates the sealing elements more quickly. Acting at the first symptoms avoids being left with the trim locked while navigating, a fault that compromises both the safety and performance of the propeller.
