TAPON PISTON TRIM
Description
Function and technical context
The trim piston plug is an essential component of the hydraulic tilt system of outboard motors, responsible for hermetically sealing the piston cavity to protect the maneuvering circuit against the infiltration of salt water, humidity and contaminating particles. This piece guarantees the necessary tightness so that the trim system maintains the required pressure and allows precise adjustments of the angle of the engine with respect to the navigation line. When the plug deteriorates or loses its sealing capacity, the hydraulic circuit is compromised, which causes internal corrosion of the cylinder, degradation of the maneuvering fluid and progressive loss of trim capacity, potentially leaving the engine blocked in fixed and inoperable positions.
When to replace this part?
The trim piston plug should be replaced when signs of visible rust, cracks, warping, or hydraulic fluid leaks are observed around the piston area, as well as when the engine loses trim position stability or responds slowly and irregularly to tilt commands. Its preventive replacement is recommended during annual maintenance checks and especially after prolonged periods of inactivity or intensive exposure to salt water, since this practice avoids costly repairs to the hydraulic cylinder and ensures reliable and precise navigation control.
