PROPELLER GUARD
Description
Function and technical context
The propeller guard is integrated into the boat's propulsion and transmission system, acting as a passive safety barrier that surrounds the propeller of the marine engine. Its function is to contain and limit the rotation of the propeller in the event of accidental contact with submerged obstacles, rocky bottoms, reefs, port structures or people in the water, drastically reducing the risk of serious injuries and severe damage to the hull, shaft and adjacent components of the propulsion train. This device is especially critical in boats for recreational or commercial use that operate in areas with a high density of bathers, aquatic activities or navigation in shallow waters, where the consequences of an unprotected impact can be irreversible for both people and the boat itself.
When to replace this part?
The propeller guard should be inspected before the start of each boating season and immediately after any impact against rocks, docks, reefs or submerged objects. It must be replaced if structural cracks, partial breaks, deformations that reduce its containment capacity, advanced corrosion or loss of material that reduces its effectiveness as a protective barrier are detected. A damaged propeller guard does not offer the protection for which it was designed, so preventive replacement at any sign of damage avoids serious personal accidents and high-cost repairs to the engine and hull.
