Function and technical context

The sacrificial anode is a critical component in the cathodic protection of Yamaha marine engines, especially in propulsion systems exposed to salt water and corrosive environments. Its main function is to oxidize preferably before the metal parts of the engine, preventing galvanic corrosion from affecting structural components such as cylinder heads, crankcases and cooling systems. Installed in the coolant circulation path or in direct contact with water, this anode generates an electrochemical barrier that neutralizes the corrosive processes caused by the potential difference between different metals in the presence of saline electrolytes. Without this protection, advanced corrosion would compromise the tightness of the engine and accelerate the deterioration of gaskets, valves and water passages.

When to replace this part?

Sacrificial anodes gradually degrade due to their own protective nature, and it is common for them to degrade significantly after an intensive boating season or in waters with high salinity. It is recommended to inspect the condition of the anode at least once a season and replace it when it has lost more than 30-50% of its volume, since its protection capacity decreases significantly. Preventive replacement at the beginning of the boating season is the most recommended practice to avoid surprises during the campaign and ensure that the engine maintains its structural integrity against galvanic corrosion.
