The pinion is a fundamental transmission gear in the propulsion system of Yamaha, Mercury and Mariner outboard motors. Located in the gearbox, it transfers engine power to the propeller through a reduction system that amplifies engine torque. Its correct operation is essential to guarantee progressive acceleration, a stable cruising speed and the maneuverability of the boat. A worn or damaged pinion compromises power transmission, generating vibrations, abnormal noises and, in extreme cases, the total loss of propulsion.

When to replace this part?

Symptoms of wear include squealing or creaking noises coming from the gearbox, difficulty changing gears, abnormal vibration during propulsion or loss of grip between gears. Although there is no fixed inspection interval, it is advisable to inspect the condition of the sprocket during annual seasonal maintenance, especially if you frequently operate in shallow or sedimenty waters.
