Function and technical context

This cover is part of the engine block closing and protection system on Yamaha and Mercury brand outboard and stern motors. Its function is to hermetically seal access to internal engine components, preventing the entry of salt water, humidity and dirt that could compromise the integrity of the lubrication and cooling mechanisms. When it deteriorates or cracks, it allows water to leak into the engine, which accelerates internal corrosion and can cause severe damage to cylinders, liners and valves, in addition to contaminating the lubricating oil.
