YAMAHA VERTICAL SHAFT UPPER SEAL 93104-18049
Description
Function and technical context
The upper vertical shaft retainer is a critical component in the transmission of Yamaha outboard motors, located at the top of the shift and steering system. Its main function is to prevent water and contaminants from entering the gearbox, maintaining the tightness of the vertical shaft that transmits the engine's power to the propeller. This seal acts as a protective barrier between the marine environment and the internal organs of the transmission, being essential to preserve adequate lubrication and prevent corrosion of internal components. A failure of this seal results in salt water entering the gearbox, which causes loss of lubricant, accelerated corrosion and, consequently, total transmission failure.
When to replace this part?
Common symptoms of wear include the presence of water in the gearbox oil (milky or emulsified appearance), loss of lubricant from the top of the vertical shaft, or difficulty shifting gears. It is recommended to inspect this seal during each seasonal maintenance and replace it preventively every 5-7 years or after 500-800 hours of navigation, especially if operating in cold waters or after prolonged anchoring. Replacing this component preventively avoids costly repairs to the entire transmission and ensures the reliability of the propulsion system in navigation.
