Function and technical context

The head gasket is the critical sealing component that seals the joint between the cylinder head and the engine block, preventing leaks of combustion gases, coolant and lubricating oil. It works on the sealing system of the combustion chamber, which is subjected to extreme pressures and continuous thermal cycles during engine operation. Its deterioration generates overheating, loss of power, contamination of the crankcase oil and, in severe cases, water entry into cylinders with the risk of engine blockage.

When to replace this part?

Failure symptoms include white or bluish smoke in the exhaust, sustained engine overheating even with a functional cooling circuit, presence of emulsion (slurry) in the oil, or visible loss of coolant without apparent hose leaks. It is recommended to replace preventively in major engine overhaul operations or after more than 800-1000 hours of operation in recreational boats, especially if initial symptoms are detected. Changing this gasket preventively during scheduled maintenance avoids costly repairs and unexpected stops in navigation.
