Function and technical context

This head gasket is a critical component of the engine sealing system, located between the cylinder head and cylinder block on Yamaha outboard engines. Its main function is to guarantee sealing between the cooling galleries, combustion chambers and lubrication ducts, preventing leaks of salt water, oil and gases to the outside or between internal circuits. If this gasket degrades or fails, coolant leaks, water entry into the crankcase, loss of compression and engine overheating occur, situations that seriously compromise seaworthiness and the mechanical integrity of the propulsion.

When to replace this part?

Head gaskets should be inspected after each intensive boating season and replaced preventively when signs of aging, discoloration, deformation or loss of elasticity are detected. Symptoms that indicate the need for change include coolant leaks without apparent cause, presence of water in the engine oil (emulsion), increased operating temperature or progressive loss of compression. Replacing this gasket preventively during scheduled maintenance is much more economical than repairing secondary damage resulting from an undetected leak while sailing.
