Function and technical context

The water pump is the central component of the cooling system in Yamaha four-stroke engines. Its function is to push seawater through the internal galleries of the engine, absorbing the heat generated by combustion and preventing overheating of the cylinders and cylinder head. Without adequate circulation, the engine reaches critical temperatures that degrade the lubricating oil, corrode internal components and can cause irreversible seizure. In outboard and portable engines, this pump works under variable pressure and flow conditions depending on the operating regime, which makes it a progressive wear part.

When to replace this part?

Symptoms of pump aging include increased motor temperature indicated on the panel, decreased cooling flow visible at the discharge nozzle, and abnormal noises coming from the pump area. It is recommended to inspect and replace preventively every two seasons of intensive navigation or after 300-400 hours of accumulated operation, especially in waters with high sediment content or salinity. Changing the pump preventively avoids emergency strandings and repairs in the workshop at much higher costs.
