Description
Function and technical context
The pump cover is a hermetically sealed component that seals the engine water pump chamber, preventing the entry of contaminants and pressure losses from the cooling circuit. This part works directly in the engine's cooling system, maintaining the structural integrity of the centrifugal pump that drives coolant through the internal passages of the cylinder block. If the cap deteriorates, cracks or loses its fit, the cooling system loses effectiveness, allowing the entry of salt water, air or sediment that can cause blockages, internal corrosion and engine overheating.
When to replace this part?
Inspect the pump cover during each seasonal maintenance check, especially after boating in sedimenty waters or after long periods of inactivity. Symptoms of wear include water leaks around the mounting area, increased engine temperature above normal, and white or greenish corrosion on the thermostat connectors. Preventive replacement of this cap at each major maintenance cycle prevents costly breakdowns caused by sudden loss of cooling pressure offshore.
