Function and technical context

The through-hull with grille is a sealing accessory installed on the hull of the boat that allows seawater to enter the cooling system or other circuits that require external water intake. The integrated grille acts as the first physical filter, preventing debris, algae, mollusks and floating objects from accessing the cooling circuit and damaging the water pump or heat exchanger. Made of AISI 316 stainless steel, it offers superior resistance to galvanic corrosion in salt water environments compared to other materials such as brass or 304 steel, being the technically recommended option for installations in permanently floating areas. With a 3/8" thread, this thru-hull adapts to standard small diameter pipes and fittings, commonly used in auxiliary water intakes, bilge systems, cooling of electronic equipment or cooling circuits in small outboard and auxiliary engines.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of deterioration in a thru-hull with a grille are the appearance of surface rust or pitting on the threads and body, deformation or breakage of the grille bars due to impact or advanced corrosion, and the presence of microcracks in the sealing area that can cause small ingress of water in the opposite direction to the desired one. It is recommended to visually inspect the thru-hull at each seasonal tune-up, checking the state of the sealing, the integrity of the grille and the absence of corrosion on the stainless body. Replacing the thru-hull preventively in the event of any sign of degradation avoids major breakdowns in the cooling circuit and, above all, the risk of leaking water during navigation.
