Function and technical context

The thru-hull with 3" brass grille is part of the seawater cooling circuit, acting as an entry point for seawater into the engine cooling system. The integrated grate – also called a strainer or intake strainer – performs the essential function of retaining algae, debris, sand and other suspended solids before they reach the water pump, heat exchanger or rubber impeller. Made of brass, it offers superior resistance to marine corrosion compared to ferrous materials, being a common choice in saltwater and estuary installations. A thru-hull in poor condition, clogged or with a deteriorated grille can restrict the flow of cooling water, causing overheating of the engine, damage to the impeller due to dry operation and, in the worst case, uncontrolled entry of water into the hull if the closure is not correct.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of a bad grille thru-hull include a visible reduction in cooling water flow through the exhaust, engine temperature alarms, or the detection of corrosion, cracks or deformations in the thread or brass body during the beached inspection. It is recommended to check the thru-hull and its grille at each seasonal tune-up, especially after wintering in salt water, since the accumulation of fouling organisms and galvanic corrosion can compromise both watertightness and flow. Preventively replacing this element during the annual stranding is much more economical than facing a breakdown due to overheating or water ingress while sailing.
