Function and technical context

The thru-hull with a 2" brass grille is the component that allows seawater to enter the boat's cooling circuit, passing through the hull in a sealed manner. The integrated grate acts as the first physical filter, retaining algae, mollusks, plant debris and any foreign body that could clog or damage the seawater pump and heat exchanger located downstream. Its nautical brass construction gives it high corrosion resistance in salt and brackish water environments, making it especially suitable for permanent hull installations. A thru-hull in poor condition compromises the entire integrity of the seawater cooling system, potentially causing overheating of the engine or, in the worst case, uncontrolled entry of water into the interior of the hull.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of a deteriorated thru-hull or screen include loss of cooling water flow - detectable by reduced exhaust water jet or engine temperature alarms - visible corrosion on the thread or brass body, cracks in the screen and difficulty closing the associated bottom valve. It is recommended to visually inspect the thru-hull and its grille at each docking or seasonal maintenance, cleaning the grille of incrustations and checking the absence of pits or cracks. Replacing the assembly preventively at any sign of deterioration avoids breakdowns during navigation that can be dangerous and expensive to repair outside the port.
