Description

Function and technical context

The thru-hull with 1/2" brass grid is the component that passes through the hull of the boat to allow the admission of seawater to the engine cooling circuit or to other auxiliary systems on board. The integrated grid acts as the first mechanical filter, retaining algae, mollusks, plastics and other floating debris before they reach the water pump or heat exchanger. Its construction in nautical brass guarantees superior resistance to marine corrosion compared to conventional steels, being a consolidated option for installations in salt water and fresh water. A thru-hull in poor condition can compromise the tightness of the hull and the efficiency of the cooling circuit, with consequences ranging from uncontrolled entry of water to overheating of the engine due to insufficient flow.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms that indicate the need to replace a screened thru-hull are: visible corrosion or pitting on the brass body, deformation or breakage of the screen bars, water leaks around the assembly or difficulty in keeping the closure with the associated bottom valve watertight. It is recommended to inspect the thru-hull at each docking or seasonal maintenance, checking the condition of the grille, the seal with the hull and the integrity of the material. Preventively replacing this element at the slightest sign of deterioration avoids emergency repairs in port or, in the worst case, emergency situations due to the entry of water during navigation.
