Thru Hull with Strainer Brass 1"
Description
Function and technical context
The thru-hull with a 1" brass grille is part of the seawater cooling system of a boat, acting as an entry point for water from the outside of the hull to the engine cooling circuit or to other auxiliary systems on board. The integrated grate performs a primary filtering function, retaining algae, debris and small foreign bodies that could clog the circuit or damage the water pump impeller. Made of brass, it offers superior resistance to marine corrosion compared to ferrous materials, being especially suitable for installations in salt and brackish water. A water intake in poor condition can cause a reduction in cooling flow, with the consequent risk of engine overheating, or even uncontrolled entry of water into the hull if the closure or sealing is compromised.
When to replace this part?
The most common symptoms that indicate that the thru-hull or its screen needs attention are: visible obstruction of the screen that reduces the flow of cooling water, advanced corrosion or pitting in the brass body, leaks in the hull perimeter seal, or difficulty operating the associated bottom cock. It is recommended to visually inspect the thru-hull at each seasonal maintenance, cleaning the grate of scale and checking the condition of the sealing and threading. Replacing this component preventively in the event of any sign of deterioration avoids emergency interventions at sea and guarantees the watertight integrity of the hull.
